Hachi, a Dog’s Tale

Director: Lasse Hallström
Writers: Stephen P. Lindsey, Kaneto Shindo
Stars: Richard Gere, Joan Allen and Sarah Roemer
Running time: 93 minutes

Description from IMDb: This heartwarming true story is an American adaptation of a Japanese tale about a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him after work. Sadly his master goes to work one day, but dies at work and never returns to the station. Hachiko faithfully returns to the same spot at the station that evening, and every day until the last day of his life, to wait for his beloved master. During his daily visits, Hachiko touches the lives of many who work near and commute through the train station square. He teaches the local people love, compassion and above all, unyielding loyalty.

Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love. There is also a bronze statue of Hachiko now at the location in Rhode Island where this movie was filmed.

This movie is a remake of the 1987 Japanese film, Hachikō Monogatari, literally “The Tale of Hachiko.”

Quote Mark Graphic

I began to encounter real-life stories of dogs protecting their wounded or dying or dead handler … or dogs refusing to leave the bodies of the people they were bonded to, sitting in cemeteries for days or sometimes weeks. You find these stories endlessly.
